We are welcoming our NEW artist Gemima Jo

I’m thrilled to introduce Gemma Hodgson, also known as Gemima Jo - a childhood nickname inspired by Jemima Puddle-Duck. I fell in love with Gemma’s work the moment I saw it.

Gemma’s strength of voice and her passion for combining storytelling with decorative detail shines through in every piece. She’s drawn to nature, symbolism, and mystical subjects - we’re hugely excited to introduce her and welcome Gemma to our creative family.

“So much of my creative instincts comes from early experiences, the stories, the everyday objects, the little moments which stay with you. Colour and pattern truly energises me. I’m endlessly inspired by art, decorative detail and the emotion that certain pieces conjure up. Illustration feels instinctive to me. its how I process memory, connection and meaning. I love to translate those feelings into something visual and lasting.”

How did you find your style?

“My dad is the reason I became an artist. He was an artist, with endless knowledge of animals and the natural world. Growing up around that creativity really shaped me. He wasn’t interested in material things, he was drawn to beauty in the everyday and creating from the heart. There was something very grounding and spiritual about the way he saw the world.”

Gemma’s thirty years experience as a fashion print designer includes work for prestigious clients such as River Island and Anthropologie.

Her work is decorative, symbolic, and story-led. With a BA (Hons) in Textiles & Surface Pattern, she has always loved the work of Alphonse Mucha and is deeply inspired by folk art, family, and childhood memory.

How did you find your style?

“I found my style by drawing every single day. Consistency was everything for me. I entered creative challenges on Instagram, which pushed me to experiment, respond to prompts and develop ideas quickly without overthinking. I began to notice patterns in what I was naturally drawn to instead of chasing trends I concentrated in what genuinely inspired me to create. The more I leaned into that- into nature storytelling, colour and pattern, the clearer and more confident my visual language became.”

How would you describe your own work?

“I’d describe my work as decorative, symbolic and story-led. It’s rooted in nature and shaped by my background in textile design, so pattern and composition play a strong role. I’m drawn to simplified forms with layered detail. I like my work to feel thoughtful and balanced, where colour and pattern guide the eye but meaning sits just beneath the surface.”

Where and what did you study?

“I studied a BA (Hons) Degree in Textiles and Surface Pattern at Buckinghamshire University (UK).”

How do you come up with new ideas?

“New ideas begin with observation. I’m constantly noticing small details in nature, colour combinations and pattern. I keep sketchbooks, and notepads always jotting things down. Creative prompts and challenges also help, they give me a starting point, and then I build layers of meaning from there. following what feels instinctively interesting.”
