Iona Skye Howie is a Montréal-based Canadian illustrator and surface designer with a foundation in traditional oil painting.

Iona has a passion for pattern design and the intersection of illustration with home and lifestyle goods. She works both digitally and traditionally and enjoys working with gouache.  

Iona finds inspiration in both Medieval Manuscript Illumination and the Arts and Crafts movement. She delights in depicting stylized flora and fauna richly imbued with colour, texture and fine detail.

Some of her personal interests include gardening, reading, cooking, dragons, eating chocolate and studying herbalism.

Q & A

What made you want to become an artist?

“From a young age creating art felt like having a friend that I could meet with to create stories and worlds together. It was a constant source of comfort and amusement, using my art in some capacity seemed only natural to me.”

How do you come up with new ideas?

“I come up with my best ideas by intentionally deciding to explore areas of passion and interest to me. Recently those have included Celtic mythology and traditional ornament styles from various cultures. I enjoy collecting art books as well, so I love looking through them and gleaning inspiration from them.”
